While you are having fun with the family outdoors, please take precautions to make sure everyone stays cool and hydrated.

Wear white clothing to stay cool. It reflects the heat away from your body while dark clothing absorbs the heat making your body temperature rise.

Also, during the hottest part of the day during the summer, stay indoors and drink plenty of water. This usually occurs between the hours of noon and three. Take your children out to play in the cool, early morning hours or later in the evening.

Drink plenty of water. You can become dehydrated quickly in the summer due to the excessive amount of perspiration. Avoid caffeinated beverages that dehydrate your body.

Eat light meals and healthy meals. Foods that are heavier on your stomach take a lot of energy to digest which slows down your body's cooling process. Eat salads and fruits frequently throughout the day.

Enjoy water-based activities such as swimming and playing in the sprinklers. The water will cool you off quickly.

Rest frequently and avoid overexerting yourself. Cool down and cool off. Make sure to wear sunscreen and reapply often throughout the day. Also, don't forget to wear sunglasses to protect your eyes when you are outdoors.

THSA FRIEND REMEMBERED

It is with great sadness that our very dear Head Start friend, Jeannette Rummel, who has been involved with Head Start since its exception in 1965, passed away on Sunday, May 23, 2010.

Ms. Rummel was a consultant for Head Start with the Texas Tech consortium for many years, worked with all Head Start Programs and was the leader when putting on a conference of any kind. She was a Board member of TAEYC, HOUSTON AEYC, NAEYC, THSA and served as president at least once on all these boards. She always had a shoulder to cry on if you needed it, and as we all know Head Start Directors need that shoulder quite often. She conducted the Annual Camp Allen Training, the THSA conference could not go on without her careful planning, and the Texas Association for the Education of Children could not function without her. Jeannette was a mentor and beloved friend to everyone she came across in the Head Start community. We are really going to miss her.

Ms. Rummel's memorial Service is scheduled for Friday June 4, 2010 at 10:00a.m. at the Calvary Episcopal Church, 806 Thomson Rd., Richmond, Texas 77469. Her family has asked that donations be made to the church in Jeannette's name instead of flowers.

Jeannette Rummel, our dear friend, will be missed.

The 45th Anniversary of HeadStart

Head Start's 45th anniversary is being celebrated to highlight the significance of Head Start in the lives of children and families and its place in communities across the country. Some of Head Start's "founding fathers" and early directors, include Dr. Edward Zigler, Richard Orton, Dr. Julius Richmond, and Jule Sugarman.

Created in 1965, Head Start is the most successful, longest-running, national school readiness program in the United States. It provides comprehensive education, health, nutrition, and parent involvement services to low-income children and their families. Nearly 25 million pre-school aged children have benefited from Head Start.

Even though William Smith, Sr., Tri-County Child Development Council, Inc. is one of the largest Head Start agencies in the state of Texas, we are so much more. We are about children and their families. With Head Start and Early Head Start programs servicing the entire family, we have a lot to offer. World Aids Day: December 1st

World AIDS Day, observed December 1 each year, is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection. In 2007, the estimated number of persons living with HIV worldwide was 33.2 million and more than 2 million people died from AIDS. Raising awareness and focusing attention on the global AIDS epidemic is very necessary and very real.

HIV/AIDS has been a global epidemic for more than 27 years. Most of today's youth have never known a world without it. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently published national HIV incidence (new infections) that showed much higher numbers that previous estimates. Together, we can prevent the spread of this pandemic – through awareness, care, prevention, education and research.

On December 1st, individuals and organizations will recognize World AIDS Day. This year’s theme is leadership – from all sectors, including government, but also leaders among individuals and families, communities, non-profits and other organizations. The question is not should you participate, but how can you?

Take Action:
~ Get tested for HIV. To find an HIV Testing location near you in the United States, send a text message with your ZIP code to KNOWIT (566948) or visit www.hivtest.org.
~ practice safer methods to prevent HIV and decide not to engage in high risk behaviors. How can I prevent HIV infection?
~ talk about HIV prevention with youth, family, friends, and colleagues. Go get tested together.
~ provide support to people living with HIV/AIDS. AIDS.gov is a great and helpful resource. Learn more

Fathers Reading Everyday (FRED)

On October 22, 1982, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed October as Head Start Awareness Month. Twenty-seven years after the proclamation, his words still inspire us to celebrate this great program:

"Since its establishment in 1965, the National Head Start Program has helped over ...[twenty-five]... million low-income pre-school children and their families. In so doing, it has earned recognition and support for its success in early childhood education and development. Equally important, the health and nutrition aspects of the program have improved the prevention, detection, and treatment of children's medical, dental, and nutritional problems, thereby removing barriers to growth and learning. Perhaps the most significant factor in the success of Head Start has been the involvement of parents, volunteers, and the community. Their commitment and the services provided by dedicated Head Start staff have been instrumental in creating a quality program that truly provides young children with a "head start" in life."

Child Safety: Pets

Parents with young kids in their home often think to get things childproofed, with baby gates on stairs, locks on cabinets, and covers on electrical outlets. If you have a pet in the home, you may be overlooking a common hidden danger to your child's health and safety. Many parents forget that dry pet food is a choking hazard to their infants, toddlers, and preschool-age children.

Like coins, hard candy, and toys with small parts, dry pet food should be kept away from infants, toddlers, and younger preschool age children. That means that simply putting a bowl on the floor filled with pet food would not be a good idea, since your child could easily get to it. Instead, feed your pet in a childproofed room of the house.

In addition to the more obvious choking hazard of dry pet food, there is the more hidden hazard that parents may not be aware of -- the recalls of pet food because of contamination with Salmonella. According to the CDC, as of October 2008, there have been 79 cases of Salmonella infections in 21 states from contaminated dog and cat food. And most involve young children, with a median age of infection of only 3 years of age.

Another source of contamination may simply be touching the contaminated pet food and then eating something else before washing their hands or simply putting their fingers in their mouth. Since there have been at least 13 recall announcements involving 135 pet products since 2006 and there is always the danger of choking from dry pet food, parents should take steps to keep their family safe when feeding their pets, including:
.......washing their hands after handling pet food and their pets feeding dish
.......not leaving pet food unattended where a young child can get to it
.......avoid putting pet food and feeding dishes in the kitchen where you prepare food for the family.
.......checking the floor for leftover pet food after your dog or cat eats

Also, to keep both your family and pet safe, monitor the FDA for recalls and safety alerts about pet food. As always, children safety is the #1 priority. Leave comments below and share your children and pet safety tips.

Be Prepared: Hurricane Preparedness

Everyone in a hurricane-prone area must take initiative now to prepare for the next hurricane. Know that it can happen where you live and affect your family. Practice the three simple steps of disaster preparedness.

Make a plan, make a kit and get informed. Make a plan so you know what you will do if you need to evacuate - where to go, what to do with your pets, how to meet up with your family members if you need to leave quickly.
Every home should also have a disaster supply kit with a battery-powered radio, new batteries, food, water supply, first aid kit, and any necessary medications or equiptment. If you decide to use home generators, please make sure you read the safety precautions for proper usage.
It is also vital to stay informed during any disaster. Listen to the radio or TV newscasts before and during an evacuation, and stay connected to any updates on the weather conditions in your area.

The Office of Communications would like for you to stay informed when it comes to Tropical Storm Gustav.

Hurricane Gustav is headed toward Louisiana, with over a million people fleeing the Gulf Coast and with oil production all but shut off in the Gulf of Mexico.

At 2100 GMT the US National Hurricane Center said Category Three Hurricane Gustav was located about 350 kilometers (215 miles) south-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River below New Orleans.

The storm was blowing sustained winds of 185 kilometers (115 miles) per hour and moving toward the northwest at 30 kilometers (18 miles) per hour, putting its likely landfall around noon Monday, with winds affecting a wide swath from Mississippi to Texas.

The NHC said the storm's forward progress could slow but that it could also strengthen while it heads northward over the Gulf of Mexico.

Edouard in the Gulf, Headed West

The Office of Communications would like for you to stay informed when it comes to Tropical Storm Edouard.

In the northern Gulf of Mexico, Tropical Storm Edouard (45 mph) is the fifth named storm of the Atlantic Hurricane Season continues to move west at 7 mph toward the Upper Texas Coast and southwest Louisiana.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning for... western Matagorda County in southeast Texas... extreme southern Wharton County in southeast Texas...

The official forecast keeps Edouard as a strong Tropical Storm and close to hurricane strength as it moves toward the Upper Texas Coast making landfall by late morning into early afternoon Tuesday. There is a small chance it could reach minimal hurricane intensity before making landfall.

Everyone loves a long-weekend barbecue!!

Kids will want to help with preparations, but give them food safety tips first, like washing hands, rinsing fruits and vegetables, and being careful around raw meat.

Keep a close eye on children once the barbecue is lit. Small children might try to peek at what's cooking. You should mark an area around the barbecue and not allow children or pets in this space. Never leave matches, lighters or lighter fluid where kids can play with them. Children like to act like Mom or Dad and may try to use one of these items.

This 4th of July, remember family safety! Have fun and keep family first.

Beginning March 3, 2008

Head Start children attend school Monday-Thursday from 7:30am-1:30pm. Early Head Start children attend school Monday-Friday. Hours vary according to center.
